Demo Day - and Days and Days and Days Series: Upstairs Hallway Edition!
We're on to our third demo post - what do you guys think so far? Does the demo in the kitchen and dining room and master bathroom scare you, or are you ready to grab a hammer and crowbar and start tearing down walls? I know from the time we sold our home in Louisville, KY (which we also renovated ourselves) in October 2016 to buying Birtha in June 2017, I was itching to buy and renovate another house!
Thankfully, Clayton and I work incredibly well together, we collaborate and almost always agree on design choices (minus that one time when Clayton thought it was truly a good idea to cover the opening of a sink cabinet with a curtain - no, Clayton, no).
We have a really exciting vision for the upstairs hallway (but I'm not going to share it yet!), so let's take a look at where Birtha started in this space!
As you saw in Demo Day - and Days and Days and Days Series: Master Bath Edition! post, when you first come up the stairs, you are greeted by a door that leads you to the master bath.
Right before that, if you were to turn around on the second landing on the stairs, this would be your view.
Claytonsaw Matt was struggling decided it was time for him and his trusty sawzall to get in on the action.
Side note: The ceiling lights look pretty cute here, but I don't remember thinking they were cute in person.

Coming up the stairs (master bath hallway access is to your left), you'll see the wallpaper stops (strange, but also thank god), one guest bedroom, a large wooden bookcase (which is where we found the "Clay to Win" playing card!) and behind that the door to the other guest bedroom.
Opposite of the bookcase is a six-door closet. Just a few days before we closed, we visited Birtha again and what I thought was a shoe in the closet ended up being a deceased woodpecker. UGH - that sweet baby just broke my heart!
Our good friend Matt (the one who almost had his head smashed in the day before from the falling ceiling) was the one to start the demo of the closets.
I think he was trying to just use his brute strength to knock this part of the closet loose. I can't remember if he was successful or not.

We love the big window at the end of the hallway so much - the light that pours in is just beautiful and makes the space feel so bright and peaceful.
I don't have any photos of us removing the bookcase on the right, but it was fairly easy. Most of the shelves came out without too much effort, and there were just a few boards that required some effort.
Matt (and Clayton) used a sledgehammer to remove the drywall on the outside of the closet.
I know literally every photo with a person in it, except for one, contains Matt and not us (I mean, you take free labor when you can get it!). Being the very good friends that we are, we told Matt that if he wanted to stick around for demo days, he had to prove to us that he wasn't a liability like he was the day before. That's when he left (and why this last photo has no Matt).
I have a few other photos where the hallway is tidied up a little more without the boards and doors in the way, but those photos also contain some of our renovations, so no sharing those just yet! (Are you excited to see renovation progress?)
What do you think our plan for this upstairs hallway is? What would yours be?
Check back on Monday morning for Demo Day - and Days and Days and Days Series: Living Room Edition! And as always, if you have any questions, leave them in the comments - we'd absolutely love to hear from you!
